To clarify, the restrictions on travel and the number of performers allowed per shoot are usually set by the agents and location owners. They are not legal restrictions. Hell, Florida acts like COVID doesn’t even exist, so there are no legal restrictions if you shoot in Miami. It’s just a question of the comfort level of the talent and crew.

I tend to favor big group scenes which have tighter profit margins. If I shot BG, I would be comfortable enough to resume shooting now, but then I would be shooting contrary to my vision of good porn. BG is fine every now and then, and I’ll do it once in a while, but it’s not as interesting as group interaction and not what I want to become known for shooting.

The future, as ever, is in flux. I’ve got all kinds of ideas. I hope I’ll be able to do Ritual someday soon, at the very least. I don’t want to give away specifics, but if you love gonzo scenes that have actual costumes and set design, and proper cinematic lighting, you’re gonna love Ritual.

I think the biggest problem in gonzo today is that everyone tries to copy each other. People are afraid to simply shoot what is sexy to them. It’s all a big race to beat the SEO algorithm & cram as many genres as possible into your product.

I don’t like that. I like porn that is true to the person shooting it. Certainly, you can be inspired by other people’s work if it speaks to you, and you should imitate things they did that you like. I just think a certain element of personality has been lost. I don’t know. It’s hard to explain. Am I making any sense?

Case in point: Mike Adriano. I love what Mike does, but I have no desire to copy it. I couldn’t do what he does as well as he does it, so what‘s the point?

I think Mike’s biggest problem is repetition. He has a formula and it works for him, but my God does he stick to it! All of Mike’s output feels pretty much the same. That’s either a very good thing (if you like it) or a very bad thing (if you want more variety out of him).

I take inspiration from some of his camera angles, but that’s about it.

Tushy has no edge. They are formulaic and predictable, the performers often lack chemistry and are just doing what they are told to do, and there is no handheld camera work to emphasize what’s happening. You feel detached from the action. I want to see emotion in the girl’s eyes, or better yet, an actual sense that the male talent is controlling the scene. With Tushy, it feels a lot closer to the stale “feature porn” of the ‘90s and early ‘00s, with just a little twist of kink provided by the presence of anal sex.

I like high-quality photography and cinematography (and lighting in particular is a sorely neglected aspect of gonzo porn today), but Tushy is just bland. It looks gorgeous, but it has no edge.

Clearly, they have been very successful at what they do... to the detriment of anal producers who want access to the best anal talent, in my opinion, but still...

Hey Mister Ananas, welcome back after your winter hibernation (and most wise you are to do so!)

I was reading your comments about the type of scenes you are thinking about making in the future, and I wondered if you have ever thought about using porn comix as a source of ideas. In particular, the works of Fernando for Dofantasy?

Magizi87 and I were raving about how the work of Fernando allows for possibilities that just don't seem to exist in porn as it is done here:
Strong and extended narratives (even running across series); multiple characters (appearing across series); the possibility for two scenarios running simultaneously, with the 'editing' (in comic terms) switching between them to maintain suspense and keep multiple arousing situations on the boil; mixing genres from other media cutures (so 1940s film noir, 1950s comic book detective stories, classic backpackers horror films, etc) to create themes and moods.

People often dismiss comix because they are seen as a geeky side event to the main porn scene, but (when they are well finely conceived and executed), and Fernando is the best) they are actually rich with porn ideas that don't generally make it into real life porn.
Maybe have a look at some Fernando online if you are currently feeling around for new ideas and potential directions atm.

Ritual is a concept I’ve had kicking around for a couple years which is a step above the average gonzo production in terms of costumes and sets. It won’t be cheap to make, so it doesn’t make sense to produce it during COVID. The basic concept is a hybrid of the action and camera style of gonzo porn with the intricate cinematography and set design of feature porn. That’s not the ENTIRE concept - I am deliberately withholding some very important details - but it’s very focused on hard anal shot in well-filmed settings.

If / when I finally do it, I’ll need to be very careful about my distribution strategy to maximize profits. That’s something I might want to release on Blu-ray in addition to Pornbox. I’m not sure how that will work logistically. Again, I’m deliberately not giving you all the details, and there will be other reasons you’ll want to buy it. I’ll be sure there are plenty of incentives.

You can think about the name ‘Ritual’ and what that might suggest about setting, costume design, etc. but I’m giving you no hints.

Anyway, the point is that it’s a long way off. That won’t be my first project back. I just hope to be able to do it sometime relatively soon and not have to wait too long.
