Ok, a few more before the weekend. ;)

Teller Bunte Knete - Stadtmensch
I guess on some level you could call these hippies, interesting folk rock.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=gTpdgxAmgMI

Hammerfest - Arbeitslos
More or less hard rock with lyrics dealing with the perils of not being able to find employment after finishing school which was poignant at the time.

I'll be absolutely honest. I don't like it. I think around 1982 the whole synth thing kicked in, and so faceless in the most part.

You it was who introduced me to Sandy Denny's voice, from just over ten years before, and I thank you so much for it. This was the real deal. And I think so is Cat Stevens below, you just can't compare the genres in terms of authenticity. I say this because I respect your opinions and tastes. To respect someone means above all to be honest.

I have to say I am a sucker for various types of synth music, though I must say the more commercialised and "lowest common denominator" logic that was enabled by its forthcoming can be bad. But for me it's not about the tools, but how you use them. Of course the rest is a matter of taste and there's no accounting for that. But I would say it's a shame new technologies often don't get used in the music industry to further develop originality or discover stunning new sounds but rather to streamline it and churn out generic piece after piece which then reflects in the further and further degeneration of chart music. I feel honored to have been the one to have introduced you to Sandy Denny voice, I'd always figured you had already known about her before ;)

Thanks so much. To be honest, I'm really delving into what is called modal music. It was before major and minor modes. But its still there big time. Most of the Beatles Revolver is based on what is is called using a key with a flattened seventh note. I am not going to be a pretentious cunt, so you really would need a midi program and files to know what I'm talking about. But its fascinating. So much folk music is based on this, what they call, Mixolydian mode. If you love music, like I do and I know you do, you should look into study. But be careful how you start. I would say, studying modes is the best way to go. And most of its free these days on Youtube. Thanks!

Would you believe, I'm doing a university degree in Medieval and Renaissance music right now, on-line because of course I'm working. But I can tell you it's fascinating. I have a piano lesson once every fortnight, and I self-train on a cello. I think musical interaction, if you are fortunate enough to have the time and money to do it, is so wonderfully self-fulfilling. And of course, to understand you are fortunate enough, means you were not brought up as a child to such indulgences and luxuries.

But the more I study, the more I appreciate folk music, the music of the simple country folk without any training. That is quite an irony.

More power to you, must be quite a big deal to be able to still find oneself going for such a degree in parallel to work at this stage of life, if one may put it that way.

I love folk for it has, at its core, this magical ability to transport a great deal of experiences, legends, stories and of course generally folklore, time and time rearranged and rewritten to suit the times but yet always retaining that original essence. It's timeless. It also helps to get you interested in a language to deciper all of these qualities and vice versa, I am for example very big on Kurdish folk music and hope that someday I shall find the time and courage to finally learn the Kurmanji dialect of Kurdish to be able to appreciate it even more. I've already got the books lying around after all :D

Here Comes The Flood - Peter Gabriel

This England is getting harder & harder to find. It's a small country, unlike the USA or Russia where you can stay rooted in your own time & era.

But it's still there. I'd love to make a video of the Dunkirk evacuation to this video.

Philip Larkin MCMXIV

Those long uneven lines
Standing as patiently
As if they were stretched outside
The Oval or Villa Park,
The crowns of hats, the sun
On moustached archaic faces
Grinning as if it were all
An August Bank Holiday lark;

And the shut shops, the bleached
Established names on the sunblinds,
The farthings and sovereigns,
And dark-clothed children at play
Called after kings and queens,
The tin advertisements
For cocoa and twist, and the pubs
Wide open all day;

And the countryside not caring:
The place-names all hazed over
With flowering grasses, and fields
Shadowing Domesday lines
Under wheat's restless silence;
The differently-dressed servants
With tiny rooms in huge houses,
The dust behind limousines;

Never such innocence,
Never before or since,
As changed itself to past
Without a word - the men
Leaving the gardens tidy,
The thousands of marriages,
Lasting a little while longer:
Never such innocence again.

You speak of kurdish music,,, look at this:

these people were so grateful to the moral support given to them by Brian May etc

Christians beseiged and left to die by the corrupt west as collateral damage for their oil wars

it really is a beautiful tribute

It's interesting that you should bring up Armenia. One of the most prolific Kurdish language singers is actually an Armenian called Aram Tigran. Interesting how these things go.

Thanks very much. You've given a Balkan song, & one that should be Iberian... yet to me they both sound Balkan. It just got me thinking, the Balkan & Iberian non-European influences should be & are very different.

I've no skin in the Spanish Civil war, though the left are now romanticised & the right demonised, I'd say they were both as good | bad as each other. But man, there are some serious gems in this collection I present. This is really Iberian stuff, with such an obvious Moorish inflection, in almost every song.

Thanks.

Some of these have also been my jam ever since I started learning Spanish when I hardly had any dealings with the language before.

As for Spanish civil war music in the broader sense, I am by no means an anarchist but do enjoy this one immensely.

I've lived here in Western Scotland, best part of several years. Goin' home now. But I'll always miss it.

What a beautiful country, & what a beautiful song, from a man who had to prove nothing to no-one. At the height of punk he didn't give a damn. And what music stands the test of time? What may have been unfashionable then, is timeless now.

Nice songs. You know, it's moments such as these I am reminded that I don't know anything about Ringo and what he'd been up to after the Beatles parted ways. Is there anything?

I guess this song is a little obvious but it must have been my most listened to, though, not necessarily favourite song of Lennon over the years.

Wa wa wa wa wa wa waoh

ironically perhaps the best post-beatles record came from george in my opinion...

Watch out now
Take care, beware of falling swingers
Dropping all around you
The pain that often mingles
In your fingertips
Beware of darkness
Watch out now

Take care, beware the thoughts that linger
Winding up inside your head
The hopelessness around you
In the dead of night
Beware of sadness

It can hit you
It can hurt you
Make you sore and what is more
That is not what you are here for

Watch out now
Take care, beware of soft shoe shufflers
Dancing down the sidewalks
As each unconscious sufferer
Wanders aimlessly
Beware of Maya

Watch out now
Take care, beware of greedy leaders
They'll take you where you should not go
While weeping Atlas Cedars
They just want to grow, grow and grow
Beware of darkness (beware of darkness)

Late XTC often gets overlooked. Both from their Apple Venus album. I think in some respects they were the true heirs to the Beatles.

You know there's the interesting fact that in 1982, Andy Partridge due to valium withdrawal had a panic attack on stage that traumatised him to such an extent that he thenceforth retreated to the studio environment and XTC never performed live again after that incident. They've released some of their most serious work during that studio era, but only after a going through a somewhat bumpy transitional period. Thougu I enjoy pretty much all of their output.
