You're not the only one - I too despise Britpop, and I find Noel Gallagher too be an insufferable twat in particular. Suede are all right I guess, though. Also, I just can't help myself dropping another oblique Fall reference. This song is said to be about Suede among others.

I do think Howard Devoto had talent in spades but yes he wasn't thr most handsome chap around and his solo stuff wasn't so much proof of lack of talent rather than being indicative of the futility of trying to emphasise the pop side of things too much. He's tried to be more streamlined in his solo endeavours as is often the case unfortunately. I meant it literally when I said that I didn't know much Shelley Buzzcocks, I may actually find myself liking them and shall give their essential albums a thorough listen one day.

Something completely different. One of the most epic techno tracks ever, clocking in at 19 minutes.

Love this album and the riff of this particular song has been around a lot throughout the decades in more than just this.

Some bands can be just great singles bands. The Jam would be one. The Buzzcocks another. That 'singles going steady', you should be able to feast on with youtube no problem. Great unpretentious band.

Of the same time, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFfQRYpq1K0 the Jam is magic.

I was living in Berkshire, UK, in late 1970's early 1980's as a little boy, & all the British Rail & so on, this is magic. The other side was 'when you're young', I really do think this has got to be a contender as the best 'double A-side' single of all time.

Pure south-east commuter belt England of that time.

The Fall are a puzzle to me to be honest. I know they have such a devout following. My epitaph for them is kind of a compliment. Either they are the least of the great bands, or they are the greatest of the crap bands. Mark E Smith would probably like that.

I like The Jam and they're another band I'd mostly missed out on, as in put on the back burner to listen to later, only that later never really arrived unfortunately.

I think you may enjoy this though I suspect you know them already and for longer than I do.

Punk/power pop or even pop punk, as in the good kind are all applicable to this song.

Never heard of them. I will tell you something about me that will explain a lot. There was a book by Paul Gambaccini in late 1970's about the critics choice of the best 200 albums of all time. I ignored it. Another book came out about the same time, by a guy called Tom Hibbert, I can't remember the name of it, & it was brilliant, & his focus tended to be on the dark side of rock, so for example, while Gambaccini would have Sgt Pepper up there as one of the greatest of all time, the 12 year old me instinctively felt it was just not that good, & this guy Tom Hibbert's selection was far more up my street. So I built a collection based on the latter's book.

I finetuned it later on, but it stood the test of time. Later I went into the classical field. But I avoided one big mistake. That was going down the NME route of spending, wasting too much of my time on new releases in 1988, 1989, 1990 etc etc etc, which were pushed by the NME & other musical journals as new groundbreaking records, when most of them were rubbish that never stood the test of time.

So by luck in my 13 year old self being cynical in going lowest common denominator i.e. "I'm gonna be a musical snob & just listen to the best of the best from each genre", I feel I hit gold, but I was lucky in that I was fortunate to find the right book. God Bless Tom Hibbert, he died too young.

Yeah, I try not to pay any attention to top whatever lists or music journalism myself. As mentioned before, it has become the norm to ponder present day generic top40 pop music as something empowering and subversive (relying on a false strawmanned dichotomy between conservative rockism on the one hand and poptimism on the other), a phenomenon called poptimism. Music journals are shills

Different topic, since you mention band relying heavily on singles, I will say I love New Order, not quite as much as Joy Division but still.

The Perfect Kiss is their best single in my book

Again, another complete mystery to me. I just don't know. Martin Hannett called Joy Division, 3 Man Utd fans & a genius but I just don't know.

They certainly were a great band, totally different from Joy Division. I would love to know their input into the great Joy Division songs. I'm sure it was more than they were given credit for.

It is a total mystery to me. I mean listen to this, the bass, the sense of time, space is incredible between the drums, basss, & guitar. These boys were talented.

The sense of space is something you'd normally associate with Bach. Compare the two. It's humbling to think that untrained musicians can capture that sense of timeless space:

Joy Division:

You're killing me here by the way. It's an absolute joy talking to you. But I might need to drop off. 3,600 posts in a world of all-seeing eyes, most of mine (& yours) on the totally innocent field of music.

We are on the wrong site my friend. So if I back off, it's absolutely no disrespect to you. It's a total pleasure talking to you.

Maybe we'll find a way in time, to find a more appropriate site.

Leave it to me, but take care in meantime.

We are on a site where most people want to talk about whether 3 or 4 simultaneous penetrations are better? And we are talking about Richard Thompson's guitar tone?

I think we both need to ease off.

LOL.

Respect to you, & again, if my correspondence slows, it's absolutely no slight to you. It's great to talk to you Anselm.

What? You're forgetting about all the great in-depth analyses of why Suzie Diamond, Lucy Lee and Claudia Rossi are the undisputed best-looking pornstars of all time, which have time and time shown to be some of the most fruitful discussions in this forum.

But yes, I can see the need for a change of pace, respect and take care, been great taking to you as well.

Nice song, I like it. Actually, what you say we have a weekly update, that seems like a plan, so I don't end up racking up 10,000 posts in a hurry!

I still have to go through your Swedish | German folk stuff, so it is a plan. Thanks! It's just the work I do. I'm 14 hours out of the house with travel & shift so I just cannot sometimes give things the respect they deserve. And they do deserve it. So cool, thanks again! I dread that 10,000 posts black hearted kiss from you know who.

Hey Anselm do you know this album, Lord Jesus, it's magical. I was always a reluctant Peter Gabriel fan, I mean, I remember reading Phil Collins reaction when he went to the audition at his 'manor' & the guy was so damned priveleged, not many young guys had a swimming pool in their house in the late 1960's in England I can tell you LOL!

This is the album:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2agWXrN ... TnZRk_MYBS

And I chose one track, magic band with a great grasp of public school romantic taught history of bygone ages:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfBKr73 ... BS&index=4

I mean they're all classically trained for the most part, children of privelege but its still great fucking music!

38 years ago, it's all coming back to me, magical. Just magical. This is great music. And people don't know, but before the German tradition of Handel & Bach, there was a time that England was the forerunner of musical development in Europe.

William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, Tallis, Purcell, it's a forgotten time.

Interestingly I don't know much of Genesis's back catalogue. Obviously I am aware they were very different bands in their proggier days and later during their later more commercial endeavours, but that's as far as my knowledge extends. I've always been more on the Canterbury and later RIO side of British progressive music.

It's damned fine music though. I lived in Canterbury in early 1990's but there was no music scene apart from kneeling at the Madchester scene. All I could remember was Cambridge was the Floyd & Canterbury was a kind of poor second relation, it certainly was at that time. The soft machine was all I can remember but they were a distant memory to people even at that time. Genesis were more Sussex or Surrey. But as I said, it's damned fine music. Damned fine music.

I'm guessing you have 10-15 years on me. You would've been searching out the joints that I simply hadn't the maturity to do so.

wow! Canterbury Cathedral, like Lincoln is some joint in any case brother.

I think I should clarify that I was talking about the times when Soft Machine were all but a distant memory and at that time the Canterbury people and especially what was later inspired by them were some of the most innovative and forward-thinking in the rock music sphere, certainly not second relation to anyone. I haven't the slightest idea what was going on there in the times of Madchester :)

You would've found out the jazz clubs, talked to the right people, you would have been in your element, they too. But this was a generation before me. But kudo's massively. You would've been warmly welcomed I'm sure. I'm sure the old guard would've loved any recognition.
