You'd be surprised how sketchy my knowledge of US popular music can be in places. I've gone too far down the British rabbit hole I guess LOL. Beefheart The Byrds is all I really recognise from your list.

Gene Clark wrote 8 miles high. he allowed McGuinn & Crosby equal song-writer credits 'cos they were hungry & he was laid back. But I think you can see here his presence.

I guess Clark, Alex Chilton (of Big Star), & Van Zandt were all modern day troubadours, while Beefheart was a true eccentric. All their life stories & discographies are worth investigating I think, except Beefheart's, who just got weird after his brilliant debut album with the band. I'm guessing Ry Cooder may well have been missed because he left after the first brilliant album, "Safe as Milk".
