For some reason this was my most listened to Steeleye Span song from their first LP. Only now re-discovrting it.

It's more than gorgeous. A Lincolnshire songwriter 'borrowed' this old melody to write a song called 'fiddler's green' which seems to have taken off particularly in Ireland. So good to hear the original song.

I wasn't aware of there being similar songs. I literally just started listening to this again ;)

Digging out more stuff that I had got into a long time ago right now. German psych folk I had listened to years ago. Crazy that I still recognise parts of it.

In fairness, this album sounds good, but I'd need time to listen to the full thing, which I don't have now, but I will. In credit to me, calling out the link between the two previous wasn't entirely obvious.

So it goes.

I wasn't even aware of Fiddler's Green. You pointing that out sure helped to expand my horizon and for that I am grateful.

But greater thanks to you Brother, for expanding MY musical horizons, because they were fixed on the 'fiddlers green' stuff, you were the one who expanded my horizons, not the opposite.

If you've been out on the road for 14 hours & face the same tomorrow, the pleasure & relaxation of those soothing harmonies, the lamentable tale, the steady beat... with a few bottles of Newcastle Brown ale is a pleasure.

Brother, these people were born out of the ashes of Slapp Happy and Henry Cow. With Robert Wyatt doing vocals on some songs. This album is very special to me. I think the music was mostly composed by the one and only Lindsay Cooper.

Thanks. It sounds promising. It's melodic & that's a good start for the ears. I'll catch up when I'm off next week. Thanks again!

I'm of these islands & what grabs me with both Steeleye Span & Fairport is the beautiful clarity of the female vocals.

Now this is complicated. These ladies are well spoken, middle class girls. They are singing in a stylised manner, attempting to effect an imaginary rural peasant vocal accent, almost like Thomas Hardy's imagined 'Wessex' of his marvellous output.

But it works. It's never contrived. It doesn't seek sanctuary in any particular Scottish, Irish, Welsh, or indeed re: England, west-country or Lancashire or Yorkshire or Lincolnshire or Geordie or Yorkshire accent... it works.

It just sounds so damned genuine & unpretentious. And its both sensual & sexual.

The vocal art of these ladies, & Richard Thompson's wife Lind, too, just seems like a lost art.

Thanks man, for bringing me here. English folk always had an unjust inferiority complex where the whole colonial thing made & makes them ashamed for being English, whereas the Scots & Irish could always draw on that 'rebel' thing.

But I take this anyday.
