It's more than gorgeous. A Lincolnshire songwriter 'borrowed' this old melody to write a song called 'fiddler's green' which seems to have taken off particularly in Ireland. So good to hear the original song.

In fairness, this album sounds good, but I'd need time to listen to the full thing, which I don't have now, but I will. In credit to me, calling out the link between the two previous wasn't entirely obvious.

I'm of these islands & what grabs me with both Steeleye Span & Fairport is the beautiful clarity of the female vocals.

Now this is complicated. These ladies are well spoken, middle class girls. They are singing in a stylised manner, attempting to effect an imaginary rural peasant vocal accent, almost like Thomas Hardy's imagined 'Wessex' of his marvellous output.

But it works. It's never contrived. It doesn't seek sanctuary in any particular Scottish, Irish, Welsh, or indeed re: England, west-country or Lancashire or Yorkshire or Lincolnshire or Geordie or Yorkshire accent... it works.

It just sounds so damned genuine & unpretentious. And its both sensual & sexual.

The vocal art of these ladies, & Richard Thompson's wife Lind, too, just seems like a lost art.

I tend to agree with most of what you said in broad strokes. I think it's also important to remember The Pentangle, they stood out insofar as they approached this kind of music from a purely acoustic side of things. I mean Bert Jansch himself is a legend in his own right if you ask me. Such a versatile guitar virtuoso. He's singing himself on Springtime Promiss

I have to say I'd only ever managed to get into their first two albums, though not so much due to their later work being inaccessible but rather because I had lost track somewhere along the way and got distracted by other groups. Though I think it's universally agreed upon among most fans that Wee Tam and The Big Huge are still pretty good but I simply don't remember much about them unfortunately. I am going to list some of my then-favourites, but it's entirely subjective, I am very fond of their idiosyncratic approach and stranger songs.

Another song by the still Bosnia-based post-YU breakup incarnation of Zabranjeno puŝenje (their original singer Nele Karajjlić was a Bosnian Serb who had left Sarajevo due to the war) Many of the people involved in the original band also famously were involved in the satirical show Top Lista Nadrealista. As someone mostly into Punk/New Wave/Indie/Industrial concerning the 80s, Dire Straits come across as surprisingly fresh and not stale at all. Sad news about the months without Internet. Isn't there the option to get a mobile data plan as a transitional option in your area?

Anyway, I'd spent more time pondering what I would be doing in case of an Internet outage and thought about all the books I wanted to finally read than I would like to admit, I think it would be mostly 1000 odd pages books on history, political economy, philosophy etc. I honestly wasn't ever big into novels or fictional stories in book form, I am a barbarian and mostly watch series or films for that.

Though even I couldn't escape the classics, Kafka and the likes. Rewinding and detaching from stress and distractions I would imagine is definitely a nice side effect of having to "endure" that which nowadays in this hyperconnected world has become quite unimaginable, absolute Internet withdrawal. I wish you luck.

I'm looking forward to it. It's a challenge. Mind you, I don't even have a smartphone. I had one company given 2011 but I was on call & the memory of it put me off it for life. I can still access stuff at work of course, and I'm gonna mine those recommendations of yours regarding the late 1960's folk, no one can hang me for that. I guess I'll be fixed up in a few months.
