Maybe its general world situation, maybe just the sudden changes here, but anyway I feel a bit uncertain about Pornbox stability lately. And this reminded me that in the beginning of my subscription many years ago I almost always downloaded the GIO/gonzo/SOS scenes and stored them away on external harddiscs, but meanwhile for many years I dont do it often anymore. Its also connected with growing bandwidth and internet speed.
Thus today I rather stream my videos from Pornbox. They are always there and PB is down very seldom really. But somehow I feel a growing uneasiness.

May I ask you how many of the PB scenes you own, you actually downloaded?

I used to download every scene I bought but that stopped a long time ago so it’s now become a very small percentage of scenes that I own that I have downloaded.

I download and keep every scene I directly choose to purchase with tickets, as you never know when it's going to vanish into thin air (plus I prefer the quality of a downloaded 4K file compared to depending on the internet and trying to stream something). With my subscription sites (Pornworld and now NRX) I just download the ones I intend to watch, as there are so many hundreds of scenes it's impossible to download them all.

100% Download, yes I opt for the 4K version as well. Nothing beats 4K on a huge screen. I usually delete after watching knowing it is always there to re-download on my Pornbox account. But now you have me worried davebowman, I have too much to download onto an external drive. That would be devastating if something happened to the site or my account. That is the only perk of having ticket based pricing vs unlimited download monthly membership, even if I drop my membership my content I purchased is still available to me. And I do re-watch older scenes fairly regularly.

I download everything when I buy it, but I voted for 90%, because I occasionally run into disk space limitations, so I'll delete some videos to make room.

Streaming just isn't a viable option for me. I like to skip around a lot, sometimes get ADD and bounce between several different videos, and I sometimes use VLC's ability to loop portions of videos for the best bits. I can't do that with streaming, constantly buffering parts of the video, loading new videos, etc.

And to davebowman's point, sometimes even the scenes purchased by tickets aren't safe. There was a scene I bought with Evelina Darling, but then deleted it from my hard drive to make space. I went back months later to re-download it, only to discover that it had been changed to a VR-only scene, and the original format was no longer available. I requested a refund and was able to get the tickets refunded back, but it's a slap in the face to just pull the original file with no warning, and only being reimbursed if you happen to notice and reach out. It looks like the scene has even since been updated to be a regular scene again, but fuck that, I'm not gonna re-purchase something where they screwed me over in the past.

IDK if it matters what kind of laptop you use? Most external devices seem to support Macs although I think newer Macbooks only have "thunderbolt" connections so you need to allow for that.

I'm old school, so I download 100% of what I buy and back it up manually onto 2 mirrored external hard drives with big capacities. So my Pornbox library is my 3rd backup in the cloud.

If you don't want to manage a backup process yourself, you can buy devices to do it for you, available from Amazon or elsewhere.

If you want to spread your collection over multiple external disk drives, or mirror the drives in case one of them fails, you can buy "RAID" devices which will manage this for you.

I use to save/ download from PB 100% of the movies in 2 mirror external hd of 4tb. My reasons are :
1)I can organize the directory using my preferences (I createa excel file with all the informations
2) I download only 4k format so it’s not necessary sometimes wait ….no good fast internet line…cloud full of traffic…etc etc
3)sometimes I cut the video because I want to delete a part that on my opinion is boring/don’t like but with some part in the same scene that I like (I use shotcut to divide )..so I have NOT a perfect copy …but only the part that I like of that movie..
4)…in this new era..with war/political problem..etc etc…no one can know what may be happened to the clouds/external server..
5)we are in the era of hacker, (i’m not expert in cyber security, ), so I’m always afraid that someone can destroy/fake/copy my account….with the history of 6 years..

Its 7y for me, and I downloaded only in the beginning. Later I did it as viper (post above) exactly for the same reasons, but now I feel I have to download at least my 500-1000 fave AVLP scenes really soon to feel better again. Lots of work, actually.
If sb has other external storage ideas and fast download ideas based on Mac/Apple please let me know!

30% downloaded up to the end of 2018. Now you have alarmed me so I have to download the last 3 years of purchases. Not quite as daunting a task as it looks because many of the remaining 70% will be dry duplicate versions of wet scenes. But will still take a long time.

I download scenes when I want to watch them, but don't generally keep them stored locally. Particularly with 4k content the storage cost isn't insignificant to me. Were access to scenes I bought here to be blocked without warning then I would personally have no qualms obtaining copies from 'other' sources.

Ultimately, nothing is forever, so you are always taking a bit of a risk if you don't download anything. Will Pornbox still be running, with all your currently purchased scenes intact, in 10-20-30 years time? Maybe, hopefully - but realistically there's always a chance you could wake up one morning, go to log on, and this whole website is gone. Even if the risk is small, that's just too big a risk for me.

The irony is, I never actually have the time to go back and watch any old scenes for a second time. There are so many new scenes being produced, every time I log on there's dozens more. So I have all these hardrives sitting there with stuff I never rewatch, but I just can't bear the thought of not owning it, and having it there if I need it. Maybe when I retire, and have no more income, I will finally get the time to go back and watch all those old classics!

I can imagine!
Now just to download at least up to 50% of my PB collection would take me several days if I went to high internet speed place first.
But anyway, I see I have to start doing it soon, just to feel better!

Btw, catalogzing is a whole other story afterwards. Might be lots a fun if speed up, though.

I think the oldest is about three years old and no issues yet. Bear in mind that you really want a main copy and a backup on a second drive if you're trying to protect videos long term, since hard drives do eventually fail.

All downloaded and probably uniquely in this discussion (I admit I've skim read the thread a bit) all burned to DVD to watch on my TV. It's just the only way I like to do it. I might give a new scene a quick first watch on my PC via PB but generally I don't find that satisfying. I need the bigger screen and the ability to smoothly rewind and fast-forward for proper enjoyment.

Perhaps it's by virtue of how I first watched porn (old habits die hard etc.) but generally I'm very much a "physical product" kind of guy generally. I'm a massive music nerd and everything there is physical too. I do d/l a lot of music (only where I can't get a physical release generally) but it goes on a CD for my stereo with a typed track list.

Listening to or watching anything on a PC/laptop/phone/other device is just an affront to the soul as far as I'm concerned. Just my outlook on it. I'm pretty old school I guess.

Ah that's very interesting. I hadn't seen that, no. Good to see that Stacy does sort of endorse my position and certainly challenges the consensus LP/AV forum view that "The girl has signed up so anything goes". The problem is that nothing really seems to have changed though so I'm still limited to a very small number of scenes that pass my test when viewing the trailers. Hands all over the girls' throats and face is still really the default LP/AV style and I'm not sure changing anytime soon.

I think Stacy is probably aware of me because I posted a supportive comment to her in a thread when she was posting a lot of angry stuff about an illness she contracted at LP. The thread was taken down but I guess Stacy probably saw my comment. Good to hear that she seems to be healthy again and back in porn. Definitely one of the best LP/AV girls for me and principally because she has a strong personality and doesn't allow herself to be physically overpowered or smothered by the guys.

What I said earlier is this thread is that I download scenes to watch them but don't store them all locally. The reason I download them to watch them is precisely to do so via a good TV (65" 4k OLED). For sites other than Pornbox I have a couple of hard drives of previously downloads scenes connected to my TV but scenes here I just put on a USB memory stick and play from there.

I use a NAS. About half of its capacity (20Tb) is porn and I also have large libraries of mainstream movies, TV series and family photos and files.
Being able to have a RAID array with redundancy is the way forward and using Plex I can stream anything, porn or mainstream, to any TV in my house,my mobile phone, tablet or laptop whether I am at home or away.
I cannot imagine ever going back from a NAS.

To answer the original question, I never buy a scene I don't plan on downloading immediately. That said, I delete 2/3 of what I download and keep the best. With the incredible ticket prices we have now that means I am very very selective on what I buy

Fair point on the backup tbh. I run probably 75% of scenes through Adobe Premiere to colour correct, add chapter points, and create bespoke Plex thumbnails, poster art, genre tags, cast lists etc and then bundle them together with trailers and bts, so for me specifically losing a treasured scene is not something I could just replace by re-downloading it. Obviously, if you just have a brute depository of scenes then the benefit of a RAID array is much lower.

I'm intrigued by this. Have you maybe posted more details or examples of the benefits somewhere previously? I can totally see the greater value of local backups with all the extra work you're putting in.
