Frame proportion

Postby VBT_2 » Fri Feb 23, 2018 3:04 am

To me, some videos looks like shooted in 16:less-than-9 and than stretched to 16:9 (like 16:9 stretched to 16:10).

|s it so, or something with my player, or I'm wrong?

This is true, some videos have a slightly off 16:9 aspect ratio.

This is because of the confusion about the "new" high definition formats, I guess. I noticed this in Giorgios videos only.
HD and Full HD has a standard aspect ratio of 16:9 or 1.778 (1280x720 or 1920x1080).

With "4K" there came two different formats with different aspect ratios:
4K U(ltra)HD = 3840×2160 (16:9 or 1.778)
4K2K = 4096×2160 (256:135 or 1.896)

It looks like, the videos are shot in 3840×2160 but somehow encoded as 4096×2160 which makes them look stretched. If you change the aspect ratio of a video from Giorgio to 1.9 (with mkvtoolnix e.g.) you will see, that the video looks normal than but has a black bar at top and bottom.
