That's the most common mistake and fail. Personally I have NEVER ever seen any actor who became a cameraman or a director to even get close to get what professional film capturing, directing and production is about with one obvious exception Giorgio. Even then consider how long it took him to became great.
They know almost everything about porn shooting but lack specific overall insight on filmmaking, technical knowledge and skills. Speaking of LP, you won't find ppl like Giorgio or Luis on the street. And most certainly you can't even search in professional filmmakers pool, many of them refuse anything adult related, the others fail on the set. They can't disconnect their usual mindset reaction from what they see, they lose focus and imagination.
IMHO ideally would be someone, who loves porn, knows whats going on, have great imagination, have at least a little experience in shooting adult and most importantly have great self-management and responsibility.
I agree with some of what you've wrote but disagree with some of it quite strongly.
The bits I agree with are that you've got to have a head for business and a passion for producing pornography. These attributes rarely mix.
However, there have been innumerable examples of pornstars making the jump to production and being extraordinarily successful at it.
John Stagliano created Evil Angel, the biggest porn distributor out there and still produces films on a semi-regular basis;
Christoph Clark is another actor who has become an extremely successful director and produced hundreds of gonzo films;
The late John Leslie was another porn-star alumni who had huge amounts of success as a director;
Max Hardcore. Whilst I didn't like his films and certainly didn't like him on a personal level, Hardcore was a pioneer and popularised gonzo pornography. Without Hardcore, you likely wouldn't have seen the mass proliferation of gonzo in the early to mid 90's.
The late Jake Malone was another porn-star who made the jump to directing and directed well over 100 films. Very talented director;
Jean-Yves Le Castel was a great director in the late 90's and early 2000's. Arguably paved the way for harder Gonzo action and first popularised DAP action which Giorgio specialises in;
Mike John - Popularised swallowing as a genre. Prior to John, very few pornographers ended their pop shot scenes with a swallow;
Brandon Iron - Inspired by John and Japanese porn and created hundreds of gokkun and bukkake scenes combining DP/DAP etc with western girls. This hadn't been done before;
Jules Jordan - Porn-star with successful porn studio and distribution company;
Joey Silvera - Very well known porn-star in the 70's and 80's. Has directed hundreds of films over the last 25 years.
Without the above, Giorgio might not even be producing porn that he does as they paved the way in a lot of respects stylistically.
