(1) The point of a forum is to have discussion, and those who discuss things here often are choosing to discuss things that are quite personal or sensitive. There's nothing wrong with asking questions of others who participate in these discussions, either generally (put up a poll!) or specifically.

(2) But if it's on a topic and a thread that the member here hasn't previously spoken up on, it is rather presumptive to engage that member specifically by name in a new post (as opposed, for example, to a private message). "Rude" is in the eye of the beholder, but at least some folks would probably respond better to the PM, especially if the answer is "I really don't want to discuss this, thank you."

(3) No one is obliged, whether morally, as a "good sport," or otherwise, to answer, or even to acknowledge, any personal question -- or for that matter, any question at all! -- from another member here. That's true whether the question is asked by PM or on a new thread or on a thread on which the member has previously commented.

I agree with you. It's huge difference to ask for e.g. "how colour do you like" or "how tall are you" than asking about sexual preferences here when each can see it. It's a question of good manners I suppose. Yes of course it's porn board but for god's sake even here are certain rules.
