They've released some of their most serious work during that studio era, but only after a going through a somewhat bumpy transitional period. Thougu I enjoy pretty much all of their output.

I remember him being interviewed by the rock press in 1981-82, & though I was only a child it was clear that this guy was way too articulate & sensitive & intelligent to play the game of pop star. I'd imagine he alienated many in rock press by not being able to play their games.

Ahem! Seriously you might like this. It kicks ass! It's a band that has a brief line-up that in hindsight should've stuck it out longer than 6 months or whatever.

It's definitely up my alley, that punchy guitar and all. It's always astonishing to find what one has been missing out on and should have come across sooner. Thanks. I hope I can respond in kind and while this is quite a bit different, I hope it is to your liking. German psychedelic folk, really quite wacky.

English Settlement was my entry point so that song has really burnt itself into my subconscious so much I still catch myself singing that chorus in the middle of doing random things LOL. It's a great number. And I wasn't aware of there being such an interview before, interesting with that old music thing, I appreciate his attitude there in general.

Thanks for bringing me back here Anselm.

I suspect over the next few months I'll be physically revisiting a lot of old places to be honest. I suspect much will have changed, but memories remain.

I think people like you and I, you with the Balkans, me with the Gaelic lands, are blessed to have such a rich landscape engraved in our lives. We truly are blessed.

Thanks for Thin Lizzy. I must admit I don't know the first thing about their music though I've heard of them before.

I'd like to share this, it's along the lines of Finnish freak folk, if one can even begin to categorise this type of music. I used to listen to this quite frequently close to a decade ago. It's especially atmospheric if you listen to it while waking through a forest at winter time. Well, the video kind of gives it away ;)

A bit late for our 'weekend only' pact, though I thoroughly concede my ego was probably at play here, but isn't this delightful to see the young Jimmy Page so confident?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc8VJXrpmtU

I remember Bowie said that Brett Anderson of Suede reminded him of a young Jimmy Page, & I couldn't see the link. But Bowie was right. It's easy to forget he was actually there.

Thanks for that Finnish music, it's wonderful.

Lastly, I kind of regret talking about heroin & Thin Lizzy but it's clear from the performance this poor man was reliant on something really bad for him, you can see it in his eyes, just to deliver for the mass entertainment. Sometimes it's hard enough for us to prepare for work, I can't imagine the pressures of having to deliver like this, in front of thousands of punters who don't really get the full picture. It must be awfully difficult.

I would never have guessed that Bowie would have ever commented on Suede. Well, for hairs quite a bit different but I can see the similarities, though that may just the power of suggestion.

I literally don't do any drugs save for cigarettes. Now I am not some tosser that says having a joint inevitably leads down the road to ruin, but maybe not starting doing mind altering stuff in the first place is the best and safest choice after all. Can't succumb to the temptation to go overboard that may emerge during difficult times if you refuse to take even the slightest step in that direction. Who knows, with that lifestyle it may have started all innocent with someone offering him a shot and all that outside pressure finally manged to do him in. But I don't know the first thing about Thin Lizzy or their members so I may just be mithering on about something I don't have the first idea about.

By the way, just my personal approach to drugs. Obviously not judging him or anyone else who's been or still going through that hell.

You're a damned wise man, So cool. I'm trying to kick the 3 vices of caffeine, nicotine & beer & I swear I believe caffeine to be the roughest. Mind you I did out of necessity, play tennis for 3 hours straight last night (filling in for second game) so that's not bad.

You are totally taking the piss, in the best sense of the word, with the Suede reference, right? They were a totally loving imitation, with great originality besides... pure London. The refrain on this gem is pure 'starman', I think.

Oh, yeah. I know stylistically they're very close in some sense, but that Bowie the actual man commented on them is what had me a little surprised all the same. I remember him not being too happy with Gary Numan back in the day for ripping off his style (which wasn't really true at all), Bowie even made a song about it called Teenage Wildlife. So him commenting on someone inspired by him let alone in a favourable way isn't always a given. But I've been a little out of the loop with all things Bowie for quite some time now. Criminally neglected listening to his back catalogue over these past years as well and may have a distorted view of what he did or didn't say in interviews, aside from the Numan thing since I am a fan of both of them.

Mind you when I'm playing tennis, I don't know how I don't annoy the hell out of anyone else playing 'cos I got all the 70's youtube videos playing constantly in my head, like I own the court, LOL. It's either pathetic or entertaining, but the saving grace is I guess I don't care if I win or lose, so I'm probably accepted on that point.

Great points. I guess Bowie was possibly at a different stage in his life when referring to either? Possibly. But great point!

Don't know too much about tennis unfortunately, but I appreciate there being an Assholefever tennis scene with Amira Adara that carries quite a bit of nostalgia for me ;). But in all seriousness.

McCarthy - The Well Of Loneliness

One of their songs that everyone can enjoy by merit of not being as overtly political as the rest of their repertoire.

That's great thanks. But I'm still drawn to the fact these guys were owed some. What do you think? I know the video is after the fact, but this is serious music. It's 30 years ahead of even where we're at now. They should've stuck with proper song form instead of fucking about. They would've been the biggest band in the world. On this form at least.

No doubt, their first three albums particularly are something special.

Strangely I'd never known the second version for much of the time I'd known them. It's poppier but I like both.

You've saved me a lot of time digging. Thanks so much Anselm.

Appreciated, as always.
