I believe Breton which I take it is relatively close to Welsh is still hanging in there just barely, thanks to the disastrous policies of the French state.

I first got to know the more famous Dutch and later German (both East and West) adaptations.

Thanks, I really like this - its absolutely brilliant.

I'm trying to source a load of troubadour music, of the Occitan, middle ages France on Youtube, & this is sounding like it could have come from mid 1500's, excellent post. Thanks!!

It's as sophisticated as you like, breaks all the rules, the music lives.

There was a site called UZ-translations, it must be 14 years closed, that I collected a real wealth of linguistic downloads, using Rapidshare.... man if you can remember that, we're all getting old. So I have a wealth of linguistic resource. Maybe time to start mining it.

Who would've known then, that so much that was free at the time, for a couple of brief years, about 2008-2012, would suddenly just disappear? So glad I was able to download even if on meagre download limits.

Mind you I spent a lot of money in language bookshops too. But the free stuff was the best in many cases. You buy a 120 euro course by Routledge on Serbo-Croat, & chapter 6 is all about changing the engine fluid on a car. It's like, what the fu*k, I'm trying to learn how to order a coffee & you're telling me how to replace a car engine is more important.

LOL.

Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, a Textbook: With Exercises and Basic Grammar coupled with
Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, a Grammar: With Sociolinguistic Commentary are very good books. No bullshitting around with superficial gamified web apps such as Duolingo or anything. But still concise and to the point. By the way, I've recently discovered a thread of yours concerning this matter and I generally also often go for Routledge courses and frequency dictionaries of the 5000 most common words in addition to "501 Verbs series" which is available for a plethora of languages. I am currently learning Spanish with a similar approach, but I am still at the beginning of that journey.

May make more sense to continue that discussion in that thread.

Gotcha. But as a last point here, & thanks for the Serbo-Croat insight, some Linguaphone courses were dynamite, Swedish in particular, some were brutal. There was another series of courses by a company called Hugo, which I bought a lot of, that were generally class. Lastly, there was a remarkable series of courses by FSI, I learnt Hungarian & German using their method, it was brilliant.

Thanks Anselm.

One hit wonders, hitting in on late 1960's west coast vibe.

Actually, talking west coast 1960's: Love were a fine band, I think. So mellow but never soppy or cliched.

Argo
Lithuanian disco group from Soviet times, as the track builds up the singer keeps shouting "disco" in a more and more maniacal manner. Classic for that reason alone.

Anselm, sounds great, love the bass, its a great track, thanks.

You gotta hear this, a great forgotten album from a great forgotten band.

The band was called Spirit, again, it was the 'dark side' of the sunshine California side, just like the band Love.

Same song, gypsy rider, by great Gene Clark, but most of his songs were great. He was the best of the best, better than Bob Dylan, & infinitely better looking. What a handsome damned man.

They originally belonged to the Turtles as you probably know. What I didn't know was they played for years in Zappa's mothers of invention.

In the video above, singer was only 20. He looks at least 15 years older than that, I think.

Brilliant thanks.

They put this moron in ahead of me, a total kiss ass, I ended up leaving my job not without getting a good redundancy (they didn't take into account that I'd make a stand). I always associated this prick with this song, maybe we'll meet up some day, maybe I'll just leave him for God to deal with. Yes, that would be the better part.

Incredibly Zappa & Beefheart were childhood friends, LOL:

"He had dropped out of school by that time, and spent most of his time staying at home. His girlfriend lived in the house, and his grandmother lived in the house, and his aunt and his uncle lived across the street. And his father had had a heart attack; his father drove a Helms bread truck, part of the time Don was helping out by taking over the bread truck route [and] driving up to Mojave. The rest of the time he would just sit at home and listen to rhythm and blues records, and scream at his mother to get him a Pepsi."

what is even more interesting about the Baader Meiner complex movies, is that it ends to the soundtrack of a "call to prayer"... is that not where we are now. Truly prophetic.

BTW, Lou Reed and company as everyone knows had some dealings with Nico.

An interesting cover of a Nico song with pornstar Sasha Grey on vocals. This is a project by some former members of Throbbing Gristle where they invited some guests to do the vocals. Sasha Grey was one of them, she's apparently into industrial music, proving she was the real deal and there was something to the hype about her after all.
