I think they shoot in 1080, but downgrade the video resolution in editing to save bandwidth cost.

"Today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, smartphone manufacturer HTC announced they were working in partnership with Valve on a VR headset called Vive.

The Vive uses Valve's SteamVR tracking technology and pairs with two SteamVR base stations, which track your physical movement in virtual space without having to use a controller.

You can, of course, use a controller while wearing the headset. In addition to standard inputs, HTC also announced their own wireless controller that work through hand tracking.

Although the final specs have not been announced, the Vive developer edition includes two 1200 x 1080 screens that support refresh rates of 90 frames per second, which HTC says will help alleviate some of the nausea problems and jitter caused by lower rates.

"While Valve is obviously a strong gaming partner for HTC, the Vive won't be focused on gaming alone. During the announcement, HTC noted that companies such as HBO, Lionsgate and Google were also committed to making content for the VR headset." IGN.com

Vive developer kits will be available soon and the consumer model should be released later this year.
