Best Sellers Jan 2021 ranking looks like (check from ranks nr. 135ff)
1. Florane Russel DAP (N&F068)
2. Monika Fox wet DAP (GL374) - dry version ranked higher than wet version!
3. Monika Fox wet DAP (GL374) - wet version
4. Befana (GIO1703)

Whats this and why?

Do they forsee that Florane's DAP will eventually outsell all other DAPs released today?

This give your an idea of how a scene is selling already the first day.

Than, when the first day is concluded, an algorithm calculate the "rank of the scene" (for example for the page "Best scenes of the current month"). The algorithm is very smart and somehow "predict" the future ranking. In this way, for example the "Best scenes of September", represent a ranking of the scene ignoring if a scene has been released from 2 or 25 days.
Of course the ranking gets adjusted day by day, but in general the ranking generate on the first day is already pretty close to what will be the ranking after 30 days. It can change +/- 10% or so.

Whatever that system is, it does work. It usually picks the scenes with best trailers from my experience. Not necessarily what I would buy, but the ones that look more interesting regardless of my personal taste that sometimes may be different to what they pick.

This is all a marketing ploy

The program simply compares the sale with previous sale history, for example, selvaggia's one movie sold 100 copies within first hour, second hour 95, third hour 90.... In 24 hours the sale will be around 1200. The program compares similar movies that come under this range & takes an average. So, if a movie is selling 95-105 copies within first hour, the final sale will be around 1100-1300(will vary when taking average). Similarly the program can calculate & predict total sale of a movie with 5-10% accuracy, within 5-10 hours

Is it the hour by hour sales ranking? (now as of 9 am of today, Jan 13th 2021)

... would currently mean that the gonzo XXX-mas scene was still selling on rank 16 between 8am and 9am today, while most of yesterday released scenes sold less in the same time frame.

I guess absolutely nobody outside site admin knows how it works. Probably almost nobody cares.

I agree "best recent scenes" is just a marketing term and they could load any scene that they want to promote at the top of the list, if they want.

Probably the studios get access to more and better sales data. I hope so. Then they can make smarter decisions than us clueless fans.

I already understood all that. It's just a different algorithm working on a different timeframe. And they could manipulate the results if they want.
As I said, I hope the studios get a better explanation and better feedback.

No one can manipulate it and the result will be almost accurate

Usually they pick the scenes that have the best fucking, like the roughest ones, and the ones people mention on the forum.

I don't know how they pick them, but like I said earlier the system does work.

Well you claimed Giorgio explained it, although he didn't fully explain. Also the link you posted appears incomplete for some reason.

I think both "Best Sellers" and "Best Recent Scenes" pages work on the same data set, but apply different algorithms.

Specifically the "Best Recent Scenes" attempts to extrapolate a sales rank from hourly sales data during the first 24 hours.
However, the "Best Recent Scenes" also includes scenes which are 2 weeks old or more. I doubt it is re-evaluating 2-week old scenes every hour, but who knows?

I guess it is doing approximately what K9P said, comparing early hourly sales with an "expected sales" curve derived from historic data and ranking scenes according to how far ahead of or behind the average sales curve they are.

How they derive the expected sales curve when individual scenes differ in so many ways, is either very clever, or not.

Personally I just look at the "Best Sellers" list after the scene has been out for > 24 hours.
I guess the "Best Sellers" list for the current month simply derives an average daily unit sales per scene by dividing total units ever sold into number of days since release. Therefore it needs at least 1 day of data.
I don't know if they "smooth" the data to compensate for the early sales rush on release, otherwise scenes would tend to start with a high rank and then slip down the order as more days elapse with declining daily sales.
I guess that after a certain number of days they expect "run-off" sales to be negligible compared with the accumulated sales total, so they just count total units ever sold. Perhaps this would apply to historic months if you go back and search.
But again, that's just my guess about how it might work. I don't know any more than anyone else.

There is no hand-picking anywhere, only algorithms. Every studio is treated the same. The "best recent scenes" index is based on sales and age. I don't think you need to know the exact formula.

They go on the top of the "best recent scene" very fast, because people buy the scene. The more the people buy, the faster a scene "climb" the "best recent scene list".

Yeah, the whole "fast" factor seems to be worth it to make that distinction, whoever designed it, made the right call, the system usually hand picks the right ones. I wasn't asking this question myself, but I'm glad you guys clarify it for those asking for these things.

I think part of the confusion is caused by the terminology "best recent scenes".

When online shopping, you can typically sort search results by criteria like "recommended" or "best offers" which just means the store will present the items they want you to see first. So customers might expect the Pornbox "best recent scenes" page to do the same.

However, Giorgio and XXX have both said it's just working off an algorithm based on sales and age. I think we should respect that, because we don't have contrary evidence.

Since we customers don't really understand how the "fast factor" works differently to the main "best sellers" list, it's only really of passing interest.

As fas as I gather until now is that the "Best Recent scenes" ranking is based on much shorter intervals for sales counting than the main/usual "Best Sellers" ranking, which seems to be useful to see how a scene sells only after 24h after publishing.

What I still dont understand: Does "Best Recent scenes" algorithm count all scenes sales in that list or only newly published scenes of an age of less than 24h?
Meaning as of now, Jan 14th 9am: Best sales for wet Alexxa Vice DAP @ GIO1667, 2. Befana wet @ GIO1703, 3. Sasha Beart 1on1 @ GL382 and only now Nataly Gold/Stasy Bloom dry DAP @ GIO1701 and 5. wet BBC DAP Silvia Soprano @ GIO1690?, i.e. currently today's releases still less less than older releases?

Also dont really understand why the "Best Recent scenes" has really quite old scenes listed like the X-mas orgies?

I am actually not confused, neither I was confused, I understand exactly what the system does, it is the troll talking out of his ass, I never asked for an explanation, all I have been saying is that the system works and it picks the right scenes, but somehow he says I'm asking these questions, I'm not.

I never even said that, I specifically said "numbers" referring to sales, which ironically and "coincidentally" reflects performance, even if it is not at purpose. I never said performance was reflected at purpose, but he couldn't even understand that.

Recent best selling category is based on selling, not performance.

2 days ago I put a very very technical question and I would never have foreseen such battles and so many posts!

Its clear its only sales based for me, and probably this algorithm can't treat older scenes differently than more recent scenes, but here I am already lost because I am no programmer. Anyway, before I never checked this feature at all on pornbox, but only Best Sellers lists my months and years. I think this feature is too complicated for me to understand. But I hope studios get out of it what they need.
