Ya, the fact that every performer nowadays is covered in tattoos/piercings and usually either looks gaunt or overweight is what keeps me mainly interested in older content. I think part of it could be remedied with more attention to sets/lighting and makeup. So often everything is white - the couch, the floor, the background - and this leaves everything looking lifeless and washed out. I don't know what the objection is to putting some color in the scene.
