You'd want the smartphone to have at least a 1080P screen, at which point I don't think it would look that bad? Partly though I think I'd want to try it cheaply first using a smartphone to get an idea if I even liked the VR approach, before considering paying more for anything that might offer improved picture quality.
Like you I'd be interested in comments from people who have tried this.
