In the days of VCRs and DVDs, my personal porn library mostly consisted of stacks of those items. Ultimately I collected a bedroom closet-full. But I did almost no indexing or list-keeping. When consuming my porn, I recognized box covers and titles for some favorites, but otherwise loosely rotated through my collection by literally shuffling the stacked tapes or discs from top to bottom as I fast-forwarded through them (whether looking for specific recollected scenes, or else for new inspiration for this session), one at a time. Indeed, some nontrivial fraction of my total life has been spent fast-forwarding through porn on videocassette or DVD, looking for tonight's "really good scene!"

But now my porn is digital, and therefore virtual: the only "stacks" are the columns and rows in the file directory window on my computer monitor. That has changed things a lot!

I have many, many more "files" than I ever had tapes or discs. Avoiding accidental duplication (with resulting space wastage and, worse, confusion) is a problem. Keeping them backed up (like the rest of my digital data) is a regular chore. But organizing them for inspired, effective searching and recall -- that has become one of my 21st Century obsessions.

Yes, in the digital age, I'm not only a porn-hoarder. I confess also to being a porn-sorter and -archivist, a regular amateur porn librarian. Who among you is also willing to confess?

And if you're using some cool database or spreadsheet to help you collect your data and curate your personal library, can you share your recommendations, please?

That's the file name. Separate folders for separate acts. (DP, or DPP, or DAP) And I name them right after I download them before even watching because they pile on. The way I did it originally was a folder for each actress. Am still picking through those and renaming them slowly.. I prefer a bunch of files in one folder over lots of folders.

In my hard drive I separate videos by year and then by studio.

But in Libraries I have index of videos by pornstar and I also have indexes by niche but only for 1 on 1, 2 on 1, 3 on 1, 4 on 1 and Gangbang.

Except for when a video has several babes, I put all of those under "Orgy". Heh.

I also edit the file so that the picture that appears as preview is something that I can easily recognize. Typically a woman ass or face.
Studios that put their logo and whatnot at the beginning of each video are such a pain because, I have to edit them all to remove all that junk. LOL
Also Giorgio videos I edit almost all the time to remove the interviewing at the end and other things I don't like in his videos
For Gonzo I often delete the dildo play during the solo part.

I also make a copy of my favorite videos that I edit so the video starts just before the sex begins. Except for when the intro is like really sexy, for instance in legalporno the best intros come from Gonzo studio IMO.
But Jules Jordan films them under the sun and with a similar style and that's even better IMO.



That being say I delete all the porn that I don't like or found boring or too poorly captured.

For LP, I have passport.
I make the studio folders: gonzo (SZ001-SZ beyond) sineplex (RS) giorgio grandi (GIO) etc.
I download the standard HD (720) versions, typically around (1.1GB-3.25GB)
When downloaded, I drag to corresponding folder. I rename it to the title of the scene (removing spaces and symbols) putting the numerical code first followed by dash-scene title
At the end, I'll have mine looking like:

Ex: SZ1168 - 10v10P Christmas Orgy! LP Christmas 2015! Featuring many of our best models!.mp4

*for scenes containing the Anal Full Nelson (partial/full), I substitute the dash- for a plus sign+
Ex: SZ1532 + Vicki Chase brutal welcome in studio: 3on1 . . .

recently I had to start over, luckily My PB only has under 3 TB's
Re doing my SZ Folder is my high priority, over sineplex and Giorgio grandi at the moment.

The picture editing suggestion is very clever, and I'm intrigued. Are you doing that by trimming the video file (using some mp4 editing software, I assume) to begin on a different video frame -- a frame with an image that is more memorable for you? Or do you use some other software to change the image thumbnail within the mp4 file? Or some other method altogether?

yeah I trim the video a bit

I review the scene to see if it is worth keeping, rename the file to show the info and include keywords (dap, fist, piss etc).
Then I transfer the file to a folder and drag a shortcut to the 'shopfront' folder. Then I create a new icon for the shortcut either from the picture set or from a screengrab. That gives me a great looking folder for the scenes.
Any actress with three or more scenes also gets a folder of her own in my 'actresses' folder. I give each actresses folder a nice picture of her and then copy across the thimbnailed shortcuts and drop them in the actress folders.

Advanced Renamer is a pretty good program, I tried to link it's main site in my last post but it wouldn't let me.

It's pretty helpful once you understand how it works. Really useful for mass renaming TV shows. It is freeware.

The results (so far) surprise me a little bit: I frankly expected more "just dump" responses. I suppose I'm gratified to confirm that there are so many other people out there who make at least some sort of effort to organize and index their porn downloads, and perhaps even more people (like me) who make serious efforts to do that! But on the other hand, I suppose there's likely to be a lot of selection bias in this poll: People who tend to read and respond to poll questions on this forum are a subset -- and probably a fairly small one! -- of all LP members, and they're relatively more likely than members of the average public to be enthusiastic about the details of their porn.

I'm reviving this thread because recently, I found a way to manipulate the thumbnail of a video
without trimming or otherwise editing the video !!

It's pretty easy to do.
This method requires iTunes to work.

Instructions:

First, you open the file explorer and go to the folder that contains your videos.



Second, play the video that you want to change its thumbnail preview.
For simplicity sake, I'll pick the first video of step one, GIO202.



Third, using the seek bar, search for a moment that you think, best represents that video
and take a screenshot of that part. In my case pressing F5 does the trick.
I usually seek several moments and later pick the one I liked the best.
Also, make sure you know where the screenshots are being saved to.



Fourth, open iTunes, go to movies and then Home videos.



Fifth, from the file explorer, select the video file and drag it to iTunes.



iTunes should now look like this:



Sixth, while in iTunes, right click the video and select "Get Info"



You will see a new window, select the tab called "Artwork"
and click the "add artwork" button



From there, search the folder where the screenshots were saved and select one. Then click OK

and that's it!

You guys must be serious porn consumers if you have time for indexing stuff. Ironically whenever I tried to sort out my stuff I ended up spending way more time with it than by just watching it. So I refused.

I have well over a Terabyte of porn in my collection so need to keep it organised. I have all my LP scenes in 1 folder. Each file is renamed with the girls name first followed by guy girl ratio then significant sex acts, finally the LP scene code. Eg "Ria Sunn 5on1 DAP TP GIO555". I also creat a preview collage of each scene showing the girls outfit and a couple of positions and name it the same as the video. I keep all the preview pics in 1 folder so i can easily search and browse my 500+ LP library.

Code first so it can be sorted by filename plus custom icons.



For other sites I use dates like 2017-09-03 so I can sort by filename and it would sort by date.



If I delete the video I keep the folder with the icons.

Yes, if it is a full scene, not so much for a brief highlight clip.
For all my videos, adult or general, the first step is to decide what the basic subject matter is.
I choose a capital letter as the first character in the title of the video.
So for PORN it is P. For WEATHER it is W. For SPORTS it is S, etc.
In the case of porn, the next subset is the name of the performer, usually as two initials.
So P MC is Makayla Cox; P KD is Kelly Divine, etc.
If there are two performers with the same initials, I lengthen her first initial and delete the second.
For instance, I really like Sophie Strauss and Samantha Stylle.
So P SOPH and P SAM
Sometimes I will go with her first name if 5 letters or fewer, and distinctive.
P BENTA or P BONYA
If she has three names, then I may use her 3 initials.
If a performer has several or more scenes at a major site, then the site is referenced.
So for Kelly Divine scenes at Brazzers, we have
P KD BR
From then on, I am very loose with how I describe the video.
It may be the name of the scene at the site.
Sometimes I just go by saying the major activity, or her clothes, or the room, or male performer.
I often include the resolution as a suffix:
P KD BR Creampie On A Divine Ass 1080.mp4
Usually I add in the underscore character "_" to replace the spaces in the titles.
There are lots of exceptions and special cases, but the use of simple subsets is good.

when I want to watch porn, I start with the girl, therefore I created a lot of tag related to girl's body (ethnicity, age, tits size, pussy/asshole shape...) and their performances (only pussy, creampie, anal toy, anal normal size, anal XL, GAP, GAP with nice circular ring...)

it takes time to create the tag list because you start from scratch, but it is really cool, the limit is only your imagination

I created some scene's screenshot (with thumbnail me) for this topic purpose, to show you girls or scene is handled the same way (I just add the letter "V" in front of girl's name for the screenshot's file, then it can be V2, V3...) and you can of course create tag related to the video quality, DP, DAP, piss and all the fancy stuff you like

At one point I set up a Microsoft Access database to be able to keep a record of my collection but then quickly realised it would take a stupid amount of time to enter everything and so didn't bother! All I do therefore is have scenes group in folders by the site they're from, and studio/director where it's appropriate.

I just have a folder with subfolders for each letter of the alphabet. In those each model has her own folder where I keep her scenes. That’s good enough for me, really.

By year entering industry (subfolder 1)

Always worked for me.

One aspect that likely differs for me is that my porn collection sits on two hard-drives connected to my TV, so I'm not using a PC to browse the library directly. If I download a new scene from Pornbox to watch then I do so onto a memory stick that I plug into my TV. I don't long-term keep local copies of scenes I have in Pornbox either actually but rather my physical collection is of scenes from other sites I've previously had paid memberships with and have downloaded a large amount of as yet unwatched content.

When I'm choosing something to watch I'll sometimes think of a site/studio whose content I fancy, and then browse the relevant folder via my TV's basic functionality. I can also do a search on my TV, which I'll sometimes do if I'm looking for scenes with a particular model.

I just use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of my scenes, grouped by Studios in alphabetical order, and then in release date. I don't have time/energy to list seperate sex acts etc - for each scene I just record the title (if there is one), actresses, studio, release date, which hardrive it's on (I have several all numbered), what date I last watched it, and a rating out of 5.

I used to have all my stuff from here grouped under 'Legal Porno', but there's so many hundreds of scenes it's become too unweildy, so I had to go back in a seperate everything by individual studio (eg Gonzo, Girogio etc). Pain in the arse, but I can navigate my way around more easily now.

As not only a porn collector, but also a porn preservationist:
After using the style "P-model'sinitials-studio-scenedetails-resolution.extension" I earlier described, such as:
P KD BR Creampie On A Divine Ass 1080.mp4 (where KD=Kelly Divine and BR=Brazzers),
I then burn to DVDs, and/or to Blu-Rays, the accumulated scenes of a given performer.

Sometimes I will go all out and burn my whole collection of a model's scenes to a 100 GB Blu-Ray.

I have done this with the models Makayla Cox, Wendy Muller, and a favorite here at PB, BENTA.

So for me, the final state of organization is by model, and is a set of DVDs and/or Blu-Rays.
It can take 2 or more hours to burn the big Blu-Ray, so you hope there is no power outage.
Where I live, the big Blu-Rays are several dollars each.

I personally edit all of my downloaded scenes with video editing software to cut out any portion that doesn't interest me to save time in the future and reduce file size. Then I rename the files to "Performer Name_###_resolution".

Any scenes with more than one woman, I just pick which single performer I feel like the scene does the best job of showcasing. The scene numbers are mostly random but I started editing all my favorite scenes first so typically the lower numbers are the better scenes.

I spend more time on this great forum than on indexing my porn collection.
So far I did my indexing like this: I added important side fetishes of me directly into the downloaded title of each scene. To find a scene than I search my library by model name and check the listed scenes for side fetishes I feel like watching.

This would of course work much better IF pornbox library was still searchable like a work document as it once used to me in the beginning. But this feature doenst come back.

Additional to that I have indexed backups (too little of them made so far, actually.) by studio and scene number only. Now sadly for many smaller studios also scene numbers have gone.

Both systems work only with the help of PB shop showing the scenes in bigger format and allowing a quick scan of trailers and/or screenshots easier. I thus always need PB library open and also PB shop open to find my way in my own collection.


Btw, good for studios and producers is that this way of organizing my porn collection (based 99% on AVLP, which makes it easier) often leads to a quick acquirement of a scene missing. Well, this was the case before that crazy price rise of 35% at once!
