I think the recent transition away from Legalporno, as a concept, is very relevant here. That name was finally retired recently in favor of the newer Pornbox and Analvids brands, which reflects the broader changes that have taken place affecting the storefront, the focus on new studios and a broader selection of content, and the de-emphasis of Gonzo as the “mothership” producer. It used to be the case that literally one studio published content here, and they did it on a fairly regular basis as well, but today there are dozens of studios releasing through the platform, all on very different schedules. I understand how that can feel like a bit of a mess.
To think about this clearly, it’s important to understand that “LP” as we knew it doesn’t really exist anymore. I suppose the apt question here is simply, is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Speaking for myself - and acknowledging my bias - I think this represents a golden opportunity for content creators (and prospective content creators) to make an impact on the industry. Pornbox is a relatively open platform, which is basically an open invitation for people who want to make porn, and if that means customers are exposed to a wider breadth of content and are forced to sift through a greater proportion of material that doesn’t interest them, I think the trade-off is well worth it.
I think the real issue is one of perception and proportion. Frankly, you’re not any worse off than you were in the past. Quite the contrary, in fact. Content is delivered with more regularity today than it has been at any other time in the history of this site. You can reliably expect to see a certain number of new releases within a given style or category per day, and most studios release their content at a very regular pace, most obviously Giorgio, but others do quite well even if they’re not necessarily on a daily schedule. (For example, Yummy does not have daily releases, but is pretty reliable as far as getting a certain number of scenes out there each week.) The reason it can feel like the selection of content is suffering is because you have to sift through a higher proportion of content from studios that don’t interest you, which is something you didn’t have to do in the past. That is an inevitable result of broadening the selection of content on any platform, not just in porn, but anywhere else. Your brain interprets numbers exponentially, not arithmetically, so proportions feel more “real” and can create false perceptions in your mind, but in reality you’re actually getting a higher quantity of content than you’ve ever gotten before, and within that content, you’re getting plenty of material that appeals to your specific interests. It can feel like that content is drowning in stuff that doesn’t appeal to you, but that’s because there’s just so much stuff available overall. The frequency of major studio releases has not decreased, and is actually better than it has ever been.
I reiterate that I think the trade-off is worth it. This is really the best time in the history of the platform. You just have to do a little janitorial work on the front page and sift around for content that appeals to you... and if it is the case that you really cannot find anything that you want to see on here, that’s okay too, because the platform is so open that virtually anyone has the ability to come along and make the content you want to buy —— maybe even you!
Mister Ananas wrote:That’s true, but I think even within that framework, you’re still getting enough content that appeals to you. Unless you have some kind of extremely specific fetish or style of shooting that you want to see, or you’re very into a specific director’s work and he’s not on the platform, virtually all the boxes are being checked with the breadth of content that is available now. Even Giorgio, who I would say has a reputation for focusing on extreme content, doesn’t actually shoot one type of scene exclusively. He does BG anal, BBGG anal, gangbangs, sausage fests, TS scenes, etc.
Mister Ananas wrote:Well, marketing and pricing are different issues, and I agree with some of your points on those issues. To your point about marketing, I have been a big advocate for the creation of some kind of utility which would allow studios to build and maintain custom splash pages to convey their identity more clearly. The ability for studios to control their message on this platform is limited, but that would go a long way to alleviating the problem. I can see arguments for and against changing the presentation of content on the main page. On an open platform, you want all producers to have an equal shot at being noticed. However, if you’re in the Studios tab and you’re looking to drill down on a specific producer’s content, I agree that more work should be done to allow studios to tailor that experience individually to their customers.
I can’t speak to your point about tickets directly, except to say that prices on Pornbox are actually set by producers, not by Pornbox itself, so if you have a question about tickets, you really need to ask each producer on a case-by-case basis. I realize that Private is owned by Pornbox’s parent company, so that doesn’t exactly address your question. I don’t work for Pornbox and cannot provide any clarity on that point. I just know basically how the system works and I think it’s an overall positive ecosystem. Obviously, nothing is ever perfect and there is room for improvement.
