Andrei Tarkovsky

Postby netzerkaiser » Mon Aug 23, 2021 1:39 pm

Following on from Pasolini, I've discovered this great director called Andrei Tarkovsky.

Any fans out there, I'm only just getting into his work?

Guy was a genius but staying awake can be difficult with some of his films!

Thanks so much Iddaoeeok. So many of these guys use JS Bach's works to compliment their imagery.

This music, that predates of course, the 'classical style' of Haydn & Mozart...

Yet there were two other giants born same year 1685, as Bach; Scarlatti & Handel... & they share with Bach these vast wide open spaces in their music, which seems to be magnetic to great cinematic visionaries... Scarlatti is to be treasured for his obscurity... Handel for proving me wrong that he wasn't just a 'pot boiler':

Handels keyboard suites, my favourite is Suite No.12, though Suite No.5, 'The harmonious blacksmith' is gorgeous in bringing to life a life long gone:

The below is example of Scarlatti's genius:

Hi netzer

You're a fan of the best movies. I like that.
I was amazed by Tarkovsky's films when I watched them 20 years ago. That's a long time now.

About Scarlatti, if you like to listen to it played on the piano (rather than on the harpsichord), I'd advise Lucas Debargue's interpretation. He's a brilliant new pianist, who got a very prestigious prize in Russia (whereas he was nearly an autodidact, by the way).

Thanks Viewer2. I am respectful that you know this guy 20 years, & I'd never heard of him until recently.

BTW, its so great to have off-topic frum, isn't it?

I also like the off-topic section. I think it's a brilliant idea. And it's better for everyone.

Some users here even have good taste in cinematography; glad to see that. I love Solaris (not that crappy Soderbergh version) & Stalker.
