Visitors connecting to my wi-fi saw porn sites visited

Hi, I use Mozilla, & on occasion I need visit from TV or security alarm people.

I was mortified to see last year LP & a few other sites appear when they connected their devices to my wi-fi, with tabs to most visited sites.

Now I know I can configure computer settings so I don't see such regularly visited sites pop up, but my reasoning is that if their device is configured to see regularly visited sites from whatever IP address they connect to, theres nothing I can do about it?

Am I right? Thanks in advance for any constructive replies.

Great, I think I might have answer fom Google. It seems plausible & is something one could do before service visit, as described above.

It looks like you reset the router using a pin & holding it there for 30 seconds or so.

Your ISP knows every site you connect to, and in UK is required by our right-wing government to record everything you do online. Maybe Ireland/EU is different?

Depending on the make & model of your wi-fi router I think they can potentially keep logs of every IP address you connect to. Maybe resetting the router to factory defaults may wipe the logs, I don't know? Also, you won't know if your router has been quietly calling home and sending back your logs periodically.

This is one reason why so many people use a VPN, which I think has the effect that all your ISP and your router can see is that you connected to the VPN server on startup and after that, nothing.

Hope you get some better responses from more adept users.

Thanks. Just led to embarassing situation with strangers. Just heads up to other users.

I only browse using a VPN. Not that tech savvie so don’t really know how that exactly protects my privacy/IP but it was recommended to me a few years ago and have used it ever since.

Thanks, also this happened in UK but I don't think its govt issue over EU / US /UK, more a technical one. Thanks for responses.

Not such thing as privacy anymore. People needs to get used to the idea everything changed after 9/11 and everyone is being recorded by intelligence agencies, plus corporations trying to sell you stuff.

Plus who knows, imagine future generations discover time traveling. There is a chance someone can come and watch you masturbate and you would never even know you are being watched by a group of people, possibly family.

So when you jerk off, do it with confidence, show you have balls.

I went to a meeting in Las Vegas where they showed how easy is to turn on someone's cellphone camera without they even noticing, and this was 2011, so it's even more hardcore now.

In a way it's a good thing because all the videos of you jerking off will be stored for future generations and you will be immortalized, including everything you type on the web.

OP sounds like he just allowed strangers to use his default browser, which of course will reveal frequently visited sites. Using VPN won't hide you local browser history from people using that same browser.
All modern browsers store your history locally but also allow you to clear it manually or after each session by using the "private browsing" or "incognito mode". Personally I use a separate user account on my computer for porn stuff where I want my browsing history saved and use private browsing otherwise.

Thank you. I'd say you're possibly right. But I would've thought they'd have to be accessing my pc to see this, clearly they were opening same browser, but on their device. If I'm right, then I'm still confused. I would've thought setting browser on pc to not show history would only be effective on pc where I set this, but maybe it applies to anyone who connects to IP, such as satellite service provider or alarm people...

I'm probably even more confused now again, the more I think about it. :o

Netzer's OP talks about the Mozilla browser and seeing tabs to most visited sites, which would be stored in local history on his PC. But then he talks about visitors using their own devices to connect to his router? In his second post he talks about resetting the router which might (?) clear the router's logs. So who knows?

Maybe Netzer's PC is on a home network and is open to share access and information with other devices he allows to connect via his router? In which case it might be better to disconnect and power down his own computer before inviting strangers into his parlour? Can't think why visitors would have any legit reason to use Netzer's browser anyway. Their own devices would come with their own browsers.

Personally, I set all browsers to default to incognito mode and also to nuke everything on exit. But that's just me.

netzerkaiser being serious.

If they connected to your Wi-Fi network, your router should provide them an unique private IP address thats why i dont understand how they could see your web sites visited..

You shared your device data connection (smartphone) or they connected to the Wi-Fi?

Surely the router keep logs about sites (like others users said, you can reset the router) but the problem must be the navigator.

You should configurate your mozilla to erase any search during a session after closing the navigator or use the "Incognite Mode", both ways are worth.

Personally i have my navigator configurate in that way: the navigator erase any cookie or site visited during my session after closing it automatically, i only keep fav sites in the mark sites and no one can see what i searched before close the navigator.

Basically no one that use the navigator later can know i visited porn sites.

As a additional info, you can download some software that erase the temporal records like: pics opened, videos opened, folders visited, docs opened, the navigators logs etc etc. I mean about when you open the general folder on the computer you can see the last things opened

if anyone can use your personal computer or maybe you have a visit and someone can see this things i recommend you get one, i use a software for this case.

^ Good post.

If Netzer uses Windows then he could consider using a cleaner program like Glary Utilities (free version, don't fall for the upsell), or Bleachbit (free). Both will nuke the common tracks like recent files lists, thumbnail caches, etc. Both can be set up to shut down the PC after running, so you get into the habit of running the cleaner when you want to shut down your PC, and let the cleaner shut it down.

I'm sorry to hear about your mishap netzerkaiser. I know I would be upset if this happened to me as well. It's embarrassing, but I think at some point we all have to mentally prepare for the possibility that someone might accidentally discover our porn viewing habits.

Like others have mentioned I use a VPN. Your ISP can't see past the VPN but the problem is you have to trust your VPN to not keep track of you either. The only thing you can really do is do research and subscribe to a VPN that you believe is legit and values your privacy.

Thank you all so much. So many great GENUINE people. No wonder I love this forum.

I just don't want same embarrassing thing to happen to anyone else.

I really want to understand what happened, I'll return to it again & investigate from my end, was out on road working all night, so too tired now.

But just to clarify, if I didn't already, these guys were from Virgin, who supply my internet / phone / TV setup, & since they were here because they sent me a new box & it wouldn't work with my TV, I guess they must've connected to my router & had Mozilla as their search engine also... & there it was on their device as easy-clicks on start-up page, my start-up page... my weather channel, news channel, LP, pornteengirl, Eurobabeindex, & a few other non-porn sites I would frequent often...

Not easy going from talking about weather to boiler suited strangers to feeling totally exposed in 3 seconds.

Thanks again for sincere posts.

Mozilla Firefox browser has a feature called sync which is intended to allow you to access your personal Firefox homepage, bookmarks, passwords, open tabs, whatever, from any device when you are travelling, and keep your bookmarks, etc.in sync regardless of what device you are using.

Is it possible you gave these Virgin service techs the user credentials for your personal Mozilla Firefox account? (Why would they need that?)

Myself, I would avoid any "sync" features like the plague since obviously it works by keeping a copy of all your personal details on Mozilla's own servers, but I guess that's people's own choice to make.

Thanks, I found the setting.

Hit New Tab / topright hand of screen "Customise your New Tab page" / tick box "Show your Top Sites"

I'll experiment more with this tomorrow using a second device to see if settings "sync" as Avanfurwet mentions.

I resolved this.

On Mozilla, when you hit 'new tab' all your recent sites show.

Just go to top right of each, hit X button & they're gone.

Peace at last.

Glad to read this netzerkaiser, almost a year since this happened.

I guess you read this now with humor after all.

I can remeber an embarassing moment, i was with friends at home and because of win10 timeline (On Desktop -> win key (hold) + tabulator), i tried to tab to the navigator or to somewhere else ... but i miss clicked the key and the timeline was showed in the screen(this shit have a timeline of what files you opened for a whole month in a big size, i didnt know about this feature before), i tried to close quickly this feature but one AV scene was opened, another miss click...., the intro of the video was of a gio scene, i tried to close the video with alt+f4 but my fucking old computer crashed and froze... and i couldn't close the scene entering in panic.. inmediately i pulled the power cord of the computer quickly.

I know how you did feel that day

Kinda, but you have to retain perspective.

I was at university 30 years ago with a guy who had cut a key to his living quarters for his elderly old-fashioned parents, & they planned surprise visit to him over family celebration or something.

They travel from northern England to south-east coast, enter his quarters: he was in class at the time, & find his bed sheets neatly folded with blonde blow-up sex-doll adjacent.

That, is a horror story.

I think the best way to look at it is while privacy is sacred and a right that everyone should have. But you have to look at the bigger picture. You have done nothing wrong. Unless sexuality is a crime. You look at pornography. Wear it proud and walk standing strong. Let others judge while you go home at have a good time relieving yourself. Let those hypocrites and prudes live their life in shame. While you own who you are. Nothing to hide Netzer. Embarrassing yes as is most things in life. Have fun, make mistakes and create new experiences. Providing all of it is harmless and legit. Nothing to worry.

I use my own laptop, and visit lots of porn sites. Then on the TV, which is nothing to do with my laptop...it has lots of recommended porn sites.

Is this some kind of integrated SMART technology?

If so, how do I turn it off?

Do you usually erase your laptop cookies? Surely your SMART TV has enable the cookies option on their browser, try to disable this option.
