Thanks, man. I really enjoy that sound, but have to confess I wasn't aware of him before. What do you reckon would be a good starting point to get into his music? So many of his records seem to be revered.

I don't know if he was really that great in terms of coming out with tunes, I'm not much of a blues man myself, but I liked that one, & this one below: seems the guy was much better live than in studio, & he didn't use gimmicky sound pedals or the like, which is very rare in itself. In that 1974 tour video, I have to say the camera work of nature is just breathtaking & fits in so much with the music.

Thanks for reminding me of Syd. Haven't listened to him in years. One thing that annoyed me greatly was that years later someone came up with a catalogue of his lyrics, but it was riddled with wrong | misheard lyrics that practically all YouTube listeners accepted as Gospel truth. I lived much of my life near to Cambridge where he is from, & I know what he was singing. Much of what is posted as to being his lyrics is plain wrong. Mumbo jumbo was put in, when he was actually incredibly clear in what he was singing. But Spanish & Chinese guys will naturally take what they're told he was singing.

So for example, the lyrics I heard above, are officially this:

My God, I listened to that Sandy Denny version so many times last night.

It is magnificent. I was almost driven to tears. Besides the lack of any showiness (which is very difficult because there are so many diva's out there, even in the folk world), she was so natural. But there was also the wonderful pace of the music, so perfect, so eternal.

But I think Fairport Convention were the masters of timing.

After that, I was going to tune into some of Richard Thompson's solo work, but I settled on "Matty Groves" from LIege & Lief album.

Though I missed out on later developments after Sandy Denny left (Full House being the exception) as I was listening to so much folk/folk rock at the time and it was hard to keep up with everything. I'll be looking into some of Richard Thompson's later work, I am sure it will be worth my while.

Yes, he was a fascinating person and proficient in many languages. Once in a while, I also find myself listening to many of his Russian and German-language songs as well as his version of "Jerusalem". It's a shame he died in relative obscurity.

It was an educational experience. On a ferry from France to England, & another from Wales to Ireland, I had the enormous pleasure, 30 years ago, of witnessing the Welsh lads happily singing the night away in the bar in their beautiful language, following a rugby match. They, I think, are the only Celtic living breathing language left. Long may it survive. It was genuinely moving, the spirit of resistance to the dominant language of the region.
