Yugoslav music

Postby Anselm_Weinberg » Sun Apr 21, 2024 5:39 pm

It is an open secret that Yugoslavia during the 70s and 80s had some of the most well-developed popular music scenes outside of the UK and the US.

Just going to post a few of these for now.

Josipa Lisac - Dnevnik jedne ljubavi (1973)
Art pop mainly driven by guitars
https://youtube.com/watch?v=f7h0k1OxNzQ

Zabranjeno pušenje - Dok cekaš sabah sa šejtanom (1985)
An absolute classic of garage rock
https://youtube.com/watch?v=wV40NQp34bI

Beograd - Remek Depo (1982)
One of the seminal synthpop records from Yugoslavia
https://youtube.com/watch?v=2BOzfbJg2Vc

Azra - Filigranski pločnici (1982)
Rocking classic that shouldn't be missed
https://youtube.com/watch?v=pfWVfH9NbW0

Videosex - Detektivska priča (1984)
Slovenian synthpop band
https://youtube.com/watch?v=iacH2SfEJEY

Ekatarina Velika - Samo par godina za nas (1989)
One of the penultimate bands of the mid and late 80s.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=ooWt0uxF_0I

Slađana Milosevic - Amsterdam (1979)
Punk-infused pop rock
https://youtube.com/watch?v=txiVKayitY4

Idoli - Maljčiki (1981)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=fsfKhW_Ys88
New wave with ska-type beat, the title being the Russian word for "boys, lads", this song was intended as a mocking of Soviet socialist realism and its stark contrast to daily life.

Bebi Dol - Rudi (1983)
One of the bona-fide eccentric pop queens.
This synthpop song is about longing to be with legendary actor Rudolph Valentino.

L'amour, c'est donner ce qu'on n'a pas à quelqu'un qui n'en veut pas.

Big kudos to You. A subjet completly unknown even in other Slavic countries. Great to see, to listen and to compare with popular music from other "socialist" republics.

There were songs already dealing with the topic of homosexuality, i'd like to link some of these for historic curiosity.

Idoli - Retko te viđam sa devojkama (1980) Song title
"I rarely see you with girls" is a dead give away https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZpjWgSRISsc

Borghesia - On (1985) Well this one requires no explanations
https://youtube.com/watch?v=XQPIIg_vpQ0

Videosex - Ana (1984) A song about forbidden lesbian love
https://youtube.com/watch?v=FYuMGYz_Nfo
L'amour, c'est donner ce qu'on n'a pas à quelqu'un qui n'en veut pas.

Gjurmët -Të shtrirë mbi kanape (1985)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=n3IkyzEGzA0

Energetic new wave song from this Kosovo Albanian band, arguably even better than their more famous "Era" in my opinion.
L'amour, c'est donner ce qu'on n'a pas à quelqu'un qui n'en veut pas.

Bijelo Dugme - Lijepa naŝa
https://youtube.com/watch?v=sF6EDMGPANM

A number combining the Croatian anthem and the Serbian folk song "Tamo daleko"
The writing had been on the wall at the time this song, vainly stressing unity, was released.
L'amour, c'est donner ce qu'on n'a pas à quelqu'un qui n'en veut pas.
