LP and mongers have been going there for 2 decades now without any exposure to corruption, police brutality, criminal organizations, mugging or what not. We're not in the Pablo Escobar/Cali cartel era any longer and if you're dumb enough to go into the favelas/slums to look for hookers (without well-connected locals), then you should be traveling at all. Besides, there are many no-go area's in The States too which are far more dangerous to go venturing than the safe paths in big cities of Colombia/Brazil. Only thing you should watch is prying homeless street children. Such kids have NOTHING to loose and will kill for a Swatch watch if necessary.
