Anyway, this isn't even the point because, reading your elaborate post, I agree with you on this.

I find DAP's coming organically out of a DP very hot and almost "believable" (although I still struggle with this part) and it is not what I despise about what other people have called "circus act" (btw, I know that some well known man has used this term as well, actually I don't like that person but in the case of the "circus" he used to have a point).
Anyway, the scene you describe has the least amount of "circus act" and the most amount of "organic" DAP, so I find this to be a good compromise.
Plus, it possibly encourages the director to think about ways to make this more a part of the actual flow of the scene vs. simply setting up the act, put the performers in place, shoot for 5 minutes and then move on to the next.
Plus, it promotes fewer cuts in the scene or, if those cuts have to occur for reasons on the set, do not make them as prominently obvious.
