HISTORY: My father subscribed to "Playboy," so I'd always had access to printed pornography growing up. But my introduction to filmed pornography was in 1973: a triple-feature of "Deep Throat," "The Devil in Miss Jones," and "Behind the Green Door," playing in continuous rotation at an old down-at-the-heels movie theater on Commerce Street in downtown Dallas. I was visiting Dallas without my parents and at 15 looked old enough to pass for 18 to get in. I've been a porn fan ever since, my collection evolving through VHS to DVD to digital. I guess you could justly say I'm now a dirty old man, but I expect to continue as such until I'm a dead old man. When they find my body, it will probably be in front of the flatscreen with porn repeating, so I hope it's high-quality porn!
OTHER SITES: I've subscribed to several other pay sites in the last few years, including 21Sextury, Private, Evil Angel, DDF, Devil's, RealityKings, and so forth. My typically pattern has been to purchase a month's membership; review & download everything available that's interesting, for offline viewing later; and then immediately cancel and move on. I'd stopped by the "Welcome" page at LegalPorno a few times over the last couple of years, but always found the notion of the $/tkt-per-video plus recurring subscription system very off-putting. It seemed like a racket, or at least a bad deal compared to the rest of what the marketplace is offering (unlimited downloads).
TAKING THE PLUNGE WITH LP: But I came across a link to an LP preview -- don't recall which now -- that really impressed me: a smoking hot skinny & natural blonde minx who was obviously into group buttsex, plus some really good directing and production values. I started looking at more previews, guessing how many of them I'd actually like to download and add to my collection, and finally decided to take the plunge to see whether the content really could justify this pricing model.
PAY-PER-VIDEO: I'm still weighing the economics -- trying to figure out the proper cost/benefit-over-time analyses, and how much porn I want to buy, and on what terms. As of the moment, I have 11 days left on my first month's membership. It is a compliment to the site's content that I've more than quadrupled what I had originally projected that I'd spend on ticket purchases during this first month! But I do feel like I've gotten my money's worth so far, even though it's more money than I'm used to spending on porn. One suggestion, if I understand your system correctly (if not please correct me): You offer a fair discount for those who purchase additional tickets in larger quantities, and you also have financial incentives (in the form of more free tickets) for slightly higher-priced monthly subscriptions. But do you offer discounts for three-month or full-year subscriptions? I didn't see that -- and right now is when your website software should be automatically soliciting me to upgrade and extend my subscription! As your free archives grow, these "free" tickets becomes more and more valuable to your user base, and you could also use those, in lieu of a price break, as part of your longer-subscription promotions. Your whole model is to avoid the kind of "buffet visitor" customer I've been elsewhere, right? So up your incentives for loyalty and continuous membership even more. Finally -- and I should charge you for this idea! -- get one of your hottest models with adequate English. Put her in an American-style football cheerleader outfit. Have her do a short, hot scene, no more than two minutes, in which, in between moans as she's being banged by her economics teacher, she explains the rationale behind your pay-per-video system. Post a big link to this scene as part of your sign-up, make it a free download with no distribution restrictions. Basically use all the techniques you use for your best new trailers, only not advertising a particular scene, advertising your business model. You need to do a better job of explaining the mutual economic benefits of this system, and the people who come here will pay more attention if there are hot naked women having butt-sex while you explain it.
PLANNING: I quickly learned that I could use Pornbox's "not [yet] purchased" category to flag videos for later consideration. Then I started keeping a separate list of videos that are interesting enough to justify using free tickets when I've built those up, but that aren't quite compelling enough to convince me to buy now using premium tickets. After I'd purchased and downloaded all the content for some of my very favorites (e.g., Gina Gerson, Susana Melo, Olivia Divine) -- what I've seen others here on these forums call "instant purchases" -- now I'm being more thoughtful in spending my tickets, premium or "free" (which of course really aren't). My guess is that my frequency of ticket repurchases is going to drop sharply in coming weeks, compared to these first three. But that will vary according to how much new content comes out day-to-day that I decide I really want right away. I like the way these incentives line up!
ENFORCEMENT: In my day job, I'm a lawyer, and my practice has included intellectual property litigation, including internet piracy cases. When I signed up, I was genuinely and duly impressed at whoever was flowcharting & directing the webmonkeys, because the website required me not only to check the standard buttons saying I'd read the legal mumbo-jumbo, it then went on to administer a quick multiple-choice quiz -- and not a stupidly easy one! -- to confirm that I actually understood the economic terms of this subscription. That is wicked clever, and it would be enormously valuable to the site's lawyers when and to the extent they have occasion to track & sue pirates. This economic model can't possibly work WITHOUT vigorous enforcement to go along with the digital signature embedding within the video files and the personalized default download file names that include identifying information. In fact, I have a suggestion for management (bounce this off your own lawyers, obviously, I'm not trying to be yours): Consider posting information here on these Forums about LP enforcement activities. It will reassure your willing and paying customers that their investments are prudent and that your economic model is not only viable, but superior! Even without naming and shaming those whom you've sued or gotten settlements from, you could report results. Morale actually does sometimes get better when the beatings continue -- so long as the beatings are being administered to the truly guilty. We'd enjoy knowing that you're catching cheaters, in other words, if we're continuing to pay and follow the rules. And deterrence is part of your plan!
STUDIOS & DIRECTORS: I'm surprised, but tickled, to see some directors and others involved in creating content (including performers! hello girls, are you reading?) commenting on these forums. That's very cool, but it's also very smart: You guys are pioneering new means of capitalism, and capitalism thrives as information about the market flows more freely and directly between creators and consumers. I haven't quite yet figured out the history of this online community of dedicated wankers, God bless us all and the tingly body parts he gave us, but I gather some studios and directors are pretty fierce rivals and very competitive. And yet they're cooperating in creating and maintaining an orderly market, with a new economic paradigm. Gosh, this website could provide research data for a pretty good economics or sociology Ph.D. thesis!
WHAT WILL KEEP ME AROUND: It's all about the girls -- are they hot, and can they make me believe they're enjoying the nasty, enthusiastic sex they're having? As far as good performers who aren't already filming for LP, I'd suggest Alex Grey, Anya Olsen, Janice Griffith, Rebel Lynn, & Dakota Skye (if but only if she gets back skinny).
WHAT'S SLIGHTLY OFF-PUTTING: We're now into personal tastes, so YMMV. But I'm a butt guy, I find fake boobs unappealing at best and usually disqualifying. And I will not download a video with a fat girl in it, period. Finally, I get annoyed at directors who assume that they should cover up the small-breasted women, as if they're trying to avoid annoying men who prefer giant bazongas. (God knows they have enough other websites wholly dedicated to their huge-boob fetish!) Whoever makes a performer like Susana Melo keep her shirt on throughout an entire video should be taken out and horsewhipped. But otherwise, I'm liking the mix of content here, and I'm encouraged!
