But it’s not only the technology that has to be upgraded, but so have the directors’ brains. I have just been watching a double penetration scene shot at 4K and played back on my system at 4k and the quality is stunning. BUT when the director moves in close for a shot of the “action” it’s about as erotic as watching the tide come in. If you are interested in being able to map out the vein structure on the guy’s cock then I guess it fits the bill but if you are looking for eroticism then forget it! The LP directors will need retraining. Some more than others. The directors who seem to enjoy being close enough to give the talent a blow job need the most retraining.
The fundamental law of TV production is “let the talent do the work, not the camera.”
I joined Legal Porno because I like the stuff they produce; multiple-guys on one slut, DP, manhandling, face slapping, hard porn… . I particularly like to see enthusiastic sluts like Rose Valerie who give lots of eye contact through the production. However, some of the camera work in porn today drives me crazy.
Some camera operators, and I assume that in most cases this is also the director, seem as though they are more excited than the talent! They rush around like loonies never stopping to let us get a stable view. So let’s repeat the first law of TV production: “let the talent do the work, not the camera!” Thankfully there are many sites, mostly US based, that still understand this. What appears to have happened is that as the technology has moved from Standard Definition cameras that needed a tripod or pedestal to support them to UHD/4K in cameras little bigger than a mobile phone this important production message seems to have got lost.
With UHD we have 25 times as many pixels of visual information as we had only a few years ago with SD, plus we have higher frame rates and greater depth of contrast. This is a fantastic opportunity for porn directors BUT what is happening is that since the directors are looking at the images on a screen or viewfinder not much larger than a postage stamp they are getting too close in most of the time, forgetting that when these images are viewed on a large 4K/UHD screens our eyes are more likely to focus in on pimples, moles or vein structure than on the sexual action that tends to be taking place outside the camera’s view.
Close in shots of gapes and cum shots make sense most of the time ( I have to admit I do love the long drawn out close-in shots of the sluts bending over and spreading their butt cheeks. ) , but when the sexual action is taking place I like to be able to see all the torsos; and I feel sure that women who watch porn would like to see more of the guys’ bodies during the action than at present. ( Girls. Please let me know if I am right or not, or are you watching the sluts like us guys? ) There’s a lot more to good porn than just a cock in a cunt. I like to watch a slut’s toes curl and wriggle as she starts to cum, or the look in her eyes as the excitement builds. I like to be able to see her eyes, toes and fingers at the same time as her hair is being pulled and her breasts are being mauled, all while being DPed. I particularly think it’s important to have wide angle shots during manhandling scenes. With 4K we have the possibility to see all the details and all the torsos at the same time.
The director should be concentrating his talent on composing the right scene with the flow of action being as smooth as possible so that the viewer is unaware of the presence of the camera. Unfortunately, too many directors – and I include the Discovery Channel’s reality programs today which are garbage from a production point of view – are not thinking about what the final production will look like to the viewer. They are being deluded by the tiny viewfinders on the cameras into thinking that they need to get in closer than is necessary. They shouldn’t overlook the fact that by going in close they are eliminating much of the action. Think about it. The directors are typically looking at a screen that is no larger than 3” when making the production and to appreciate 4K quality you really need to be looking on a screen that is at least 27” and better 65”. Is it surprising that so many of the productions will make you feel sick when looked at on a 65” 4K screen?
It’s crazy. As television cameras have increased in quality their viewfinders have gotten smaller!
To any member whose reaction to my comments is that they want the camera to get in close my answer is simple, “you need to view the action on a larger screen!” By asking for close-in shots you are preventing those of us who like to see the whole action from enjoying the shoot. The reverse is not true; by me asking for head-to-toe shots at 4K I am not preventing you from seeing the detailed action. Any limitation comes from your limited viewing setup. I would say that you need to watch a 4k/UHD porn shoot at full res before commenting, because then I think you would understand what I am saying.
Bottom line: The changes that need to be made in going to 4K aren't just to do with encoders and the like but also to the production techniques and the way we will view their productions at home.
A philogynist.
